If you have been watching the programming the past few weeks, you’ll see that we’re repeating CrossFit Open workouts. The member group has also been abuzz about the CrossFit Open, and our latest email started nudging everyone to sign up.
But, what the heck is the CrossFit Open?
In practice, the CrossFit Open is a worldwide competition for CrossFit athletes. Over a series of five weeks, the organizers will release five unknown workouts (scaled options totally available). The workouts are always released on Thursday evening. Athletes then have until the following Monday to complete the workout and validate their score. Athletes can validate their scores by completing the workout at a registered CrossFit affiliate or by recording and submitting a video of their performance.
The CrossFit Open is essentially the first step for athletes that want to make it to the CrossFit Games. All athletes around the world will complete the same Open workouts, and they will be ranked according to their region. The top athletes are then eligible to continue on to Regionals and even the CrossFit Games if they perform well.
That’s the CrossFit Open on a practical level, but what if you have no plans of making it to Regionals or the Games? Why should you care? While the Open represents a proving ground and stepping stone for top athletes, it represents so much more for the CrossFit Undeniable community.
Why the CrossFit Open Matters
For most athletes, the Open isn’t about making it to Regionals or seeing how you stack up against everyone else. It’s much more than that. For most athletes, the CrossFit Open is…
A way to test your fitness
You have worked hard all year to learn new movements, perfect old ones, and improve your conditioning. You have attended countless classes and done a seemingly infinite amount of 3-Position Snatch drills. The CrossFit Open is a way to test your fitness and see what you’re capable of.
Each workout has a scaled option so while they might seem difficult, they’re very approachable even if you’re new to CrossFit. Sure, there will be scores and athletes completing the same workout all around you, but the real competition is against yourself. How hard can you go? Can you complete one more rep?
I’m constantly impressed every year by the athletes at CrossFit Undeniable that achieve multiple “firsts” during the CrossFit Open – their first bar muscle-up – or PR a lift.
A way to support one another as a community
During the CrossFit Open, anyone available is welcome to come to the gym on Thursday evenings to watch the live Open workout announcement (it’s streamed online), but the big draw is on Friday nights.
Every Friday during the CrossFit Open, we’ll program the Open workouts during our normal class times. If you come at 6AM on Friday, you will do the CrossFit Open workout. Specifically though, we’re going to pack out the gym on Friday evenings from 4-7PM. We’ll get as many people as possible and run heats of the workout while we make as much noise and cheer as loudly as possible. Seriously, the gym will be electric!
The CrossFit Open represents a really unique opportunity to support one another. Sure, we cheer each other on during normal class times, but during the Open, you have your own personal support support team for every rep!
An opportunity for a little fun
What could be fun about pushing yourself to exhaustion in a workout? Well, for one, you’re doing it alongside some great friends. Two, you’re going to do better than you think; I promise. The workouts seem scary at first, but you have prepared all year for this. Three, we’ll often go out for food and/or some celebratory drinks afterwards. It’s a great way to bond with our community over a little sweat.
