AJ is as consistent as they come at CrossFit Undeniable, you can always count on her walking in with a smile on her face ready to go at 5 am! She has been hitting PRs left and right, whether it’s a PR of Handstand Push ups in a MetCon or a Clean & Jerk, her attitude of embracing the workouts and pushing herself out side of her comfort zone has been paying dividends! She not only is pushing herself in the gym but in the kitchen as well, she just finished the Nutrition challenge where she shared delicious, protein packed recipes and learned how much protein her body truly needs for optimal performance. We at Undeniable are so happy to have AJ apart of our fitness family and look forward to celebrating many more PRs with her, especially that first Muscle Up!
Read about AJ’s CFU experience straight from her below:
1. What brought you to CrossFit Undeniable in the first place?
I had seen Zach and Karly around at local events. They are also friends with the owners of the running company I am an ambassador for. We used to hold our meetings 3 times a year at the old location of CFU. I had watched the games on ESPN whenever they were on and thought it was super cool. But not something I could do. I finally decided in Aug 2017 that I wanted to give it a try. I had run my second marathon early in the year and wanted to try something else. I loved lifting when I was in college and was excited to be able to try it again. So I knew about CFU, knew Karly and Zach were good people so that’s where I chose to go.
2. What was your first impression? How has that changed?
I was so nervous walking into my first class. I wanted to vomit even before the class started. The Don was my first workout. Zach cut all my reps in half and super modified everything. Everyone was so nice. It made everything so much easier. Also not everyone was this super fit monster. They were regular people who did not live in the gym but were there for 1 hour a day to be a little bit healthier.
What has changed?
Most of the time now if I am going to vomit it’s after the workout not before. I think that a lot of people think you have to be fit to go to crossfit. I was one of those people- I didn’t think I was going to be fit enough to be there. But you don’t have to be fit to go to Crossfit. We go to Crossfit to become fitter- whatever that means to you.
3. What was your first success or accomplishment? What made you feel like “Hell yeah…I crushed that!”?
A pull up and my first Murph. In 2015 when I was diagnosed with breast cancer we met with my plastic surgeon. We were going over the surgery options and what were the normal outcomes of them. He let me know that I may never be able to do a push up or pull up again. At the time I could do neither so it was not a big deal for me.
Being able to cross doing a pull up off of my goals list was huge. Then in 2018 for my first Murph I did 70 kipping pull ups ( then my hands tore so I did jumping pull ups). It was a huge moment for me and I was so excited. I was the kid in school who could not even do the bent arm hang in gym class let alone a pull up.
4. What kind of changes have you noticed since joining CF Undeniable? These could be physical, mental, etc.
I am definitely stronger physically and mentally. I am willing to try things outside of my comfort zone. Because of the work in the gym I have more confidence in my abilities outside of the gym. I am willing to go out and try things that I might not have done in the past. The support we get in the gym helps me to be confident in the things outside the gym.5. What are you working on now? Muscle ups- I turn 40 on May 17th and I would like to do one by then. It’s gonna be a lot of work on my part to do the extra work needed but I think I can do it.
6. What’s your favorite CFU memory so far?
There are so many. One that always sticks out to me and speaks of how great a human she is. In October 2017, CFU hosted an event for Drink for Pink, a local charity for Breast Cancer. I wanted to be a part of it but still being very new was a little nervous. Lisa asked if I wanted to be her partner for the event and it made me feel even more welcomed and excited to be part of the community.
7. Is there anything else you would like to share about yourself ? Ex. passions, hobbies, your why for fitness.
I love to camp, hike, watch TV, and Trail run. I grew up in NJ, was a D1 springboard diver at James Madison University. I moved to Colorado in 2003- I was just going to live with my cousin for a few months. I work in aquatics and also coach youth diving. My why for fitness has changed many times and continues to change and grow. I really want to show my kids what a healthy life looks like. I also love having my daughter see strong women who are still beautiful and amazing people.
Thank you for sharing a part of your CrossFit Undeniable story with us AJ, we love you!
