We are down to the final days of this year, and the final installment of Resolution Revolution. If you want to go back to read the first three articles about SPECIFIC, MEASURABLE, and REALISTIC GOALS with DEADLINES, you can use these links: 1, 2, 3.
Today I want to talk about the final piece necessary for being successful with your goals this year. If you have been faithfully completing the tasks I have given over the last three weeks, then I suspect you have already taken care of number four without even knowing it. As you thought about and narrowed your goals and set deadlines, did you WRITE YOUR GOALS DOWN?
This might seem obvious, but it is SO IMPORTANT! Many people have things they know they want to do. Unfortunately, these ideas and goals too often remain unarticulated hopes and dreams in the minds of inactive dreamers. It is not until a goal gets out of your mind and onto paper that it will begin to take shape. As long as your hopes and dreams are only in your mind, you will always be able to lie to yourself about fulfilling them and rationalize why you haven’t yet.
When you write your goal down, make sure that it is visible. Write it on a Post-It and stick it in the middle of your bathroom mirror. Stick another over the gas gauge in your car. Make sure that you see it constantly. Put your deadline for completion, as well as your weekly baby steps, in your calendar. This way your current, motivated self can keep your future, not-so-motivated self from falling off the wagon.
Another powerful tool that falls under the WRITE YOUR GOALS DOWN umbrella is Positive Peer Pressure. You are much more likely to be successful when others know what you are trying and are expecting you to do it. Let people know your goals and your plans to achieve those goals. If you are not ready for the entire world to know what you are working on, choose an accountability partner. This should be someone close to you that you trust. They need to be able to point out when you aren’t staying faithful to your plans and encourage you in your successes. This can be a friend, spouse, family member, or a coach.
For more public accountability to people you know will always support you, we have established a GOALS BOARD at CrossFit Undeniable. We have an excellent community of positive and encouraging people. Tap in to this amazing resource by writing your goal and deadline on the board. This way, we can support and encourage each other through what I am certain will be an extremely successful year!
